"Speculations towards the Orthonormal" was an exhibition created during a three week residency at LEW1, Neue Künstlerkolonie Darmstadt. Grounded in speculative artistic research, the duo investigated anachronisms of systems and technologies alongside visual and acoustic phenomena. Retracing those lineages,evolutions and innovations,it slowly became clear that certain perceptions of how we understand the world from learned conventions of another time,when applied to the now,becomes something else. Each week concluded with an Open Studio, where they shared their research and evolving output to the public,culminating in an evening of sonic pleasures. For each occasion,a vinyl collector was invited to curate records in response to alpha_alpha’s speculation of “0-bpm”. Computer science,systems of perspective,and sensory phenomena manifest as spatial interventions composed of video,light,lasers,and sound. An ensemble of projections,installations,and prints activated the space on multiple levels. A response to the unique architecture of the building...the space was reconfigured with new works as an evolving sonic and environmental intervention. At the heart of the project was an exploration of machine learning and neural networks. Inspired by the mathematical processes used to determine the "Line of Best Fit"—the orthonormal—the exhibition unfolds as an open space for association where science and fiction,signal and noise,intertwine. In architectural drawings,lines could be said to have a direction (usually) when an arrowhead is applied. In Machine Learning and Neural Networks it might be said that orthogonal vectors have a time. What became at first glance (for some, not all) a confrontation in an alleyway evolved into both ‘active’ and ‘passive’ listening and observing. Passersby sat down and listened (some for longer, some shorter), and at times walked on by. Here, you will wander, experience accumulated whispered and resonant chants of speech captured over many centuries from the Humboldtian’s and the Syntaxian’s. Both realms had/have adventurous and daring visionaries with devoted disciples. Messages are emitted from the altar, like a Tribal/Corporate leader, they blur and dissolve into excited and exhausted versions of themselves, rendering what meaning they had in their original context, impotent. At times a symbol is presented that does not explain but confuses. In our current times there is a delirious thirst for digital technology platforms as we are groomed for technological solutions made possible through Data- science, where language is used as a tool to hide behind much like the Scientific community of another era.We will leave it up to the viewer to decide what is timeworn and what is contemporary. During proceedings, the projected videoworks, on a timed loop, often overlapped with incidental location recordings and original real-time compositions to relay a perceived correlation in sound and image. As the performance progressed, alternative readings of the presentation could be made as the video loop continued forward but to a different sound. The Atelier Hall of airbag craftworks was transformed by a projection field, divided into 3 identical planes, yet each plane set at a different depth to create an immersive architectural activation. Integrated within the audio performance was the use of a ‘resonator circuit’ activated by the performers breath. &nbsp; Exploring the fluid expanses of meaning and playback through location based field recordings, electronics, vinyl records, found film footage and original location film footage. Sometimes anticipated and sometimes unanticipated, framed and from the hip. The compact size A5 format is a small provocation to challenge the value of pictorial knowledge and production back to something physical. At times the spreads are chaotic, at times calm. The layout conveyed increments of time and place...a compendium of opposites...a whirlwind and yet a place of tranquility. The supporting installation at airbag craftworks explored relationships between sound, smell, place, image and music. With an original audio collage, suspended transparencies, incense and electric fans, a room was transformed into a sensory extension of the printed format edition. Transparencies were chosen for their lack of support and frame – as ethereal as one could present images in a compact space. Fixed also to the buildings windows to heighten the interior / exterior qualities of the space and the layers within and through. In combination with sound, moving air and scent, the installation became a space with continuum – included was a 21 minute stereo loop containing location recordings. A sort of psychedelic out of time sensory experience.
