Speculations towards the Orthonormal
artists residency

Exhibition and concert performance.

LEW 1, Neue Künstlerkolonie Darmstadt. Over the duration of a three week residency alpha_alpha explored the anachronisms of systems, technologies, machines, visual and sonic phenomena. Retracing those lineages, evolutions and innovations, it slowly became clear that certain perceptions of how we understand the world from learned conventions of another time, when applied to the now, becomes something else.

Presented were are a small, curated selection of topics from each weeks research. Computer science, perspective systems, and sonic phenomena were presented as spatial, durational interventions of moving image and sound. Some ‘Speculations towards the Orthonormal’

film still: ‘When is a line not a line’, by alpha_alpha, 2025

In Euclidean geometry, it is also said that a straight line is a line that "lies evenly with the points on itself" and that a straight line is the shortest path between any two points on it.
In Euclidean geometry, it is also said that a straight line is a line that "lies evenly with the points on itself" and that a straight line is the shortest path between any two points on it. In architectural drawings, lines could be said to have a direction (usually) when an arrowhead is applied. In Machine Learning and Neural Networks it might be said that orthogonal vectors have a time. The film ‘When is a line, not a line’ speculates around this theme.

At the close of each week alpha_alpha chose to present there research and output in a public facing 'open studio' event revealed within the unique architecture of the ‘wedge’ shaped’ building. Needless to say, there were 3 unique 'open studio' events.
On the evening of the third and last event, alpha_alpha invited sound artist blackbdy_radiation to perform amongst the artworks. Presented was an immersive and collaborative audio visual concert with live projections by alpha_alpha.
